On a whim this summer Justine Sletten submitted a video to the Stampede Summer Jam contest.
On Monday she’ll help get Medicine Hat into the stampede spirit, singing on the same stage that later in the week will host 54-40, Glass Tiger, The Stampeders, Blue Rodeo and The Band Perry.
“It’s going to be exciting performing in front of an audience that size,” she said earlier this week.
The 16-year-old Hazlet, Sask., native will perform one song with a band made up of members of the local bands that will play the bulk of the evening’s music. Sletten’s song is “Reckless” by Martina McBride. She gave the musicians she’ll be playing with a small list and together they decided on “Reckless.”
“We wanted something that would be well known by the audience,” Sletten said.
Sletten hopes to pursue a music career when she graduates high school and has already taken steps toward that. She recently recorded an EP (available now on iTunes and Spotify), and is looking at post-secondary business courses so she can better market herself and her music.
The Stampede Summer Jam happens July 24 at the Stampede Grandstand beginning at 7 p.m. Hosted by Mahoney, the lineup for the jam includes Coldshot featuring Matt Dirk, Snakes and the Riot, Gas City Shocker and a classic country jam session featuring Mahoney and friends. The preshow will feature spinning by Infinite Sounds.
Admission is $10.
