Public – Wilson, Catherine

1. Please provide a short biography. Why have you chosen to run for trustee?

Public schools are truly the heart of our community. For the past six years, I have had the privilege and honor of serving as chair. During this time, I’ve witnessed firsthand the incredible dedication of our teachers, staff, students, and families.

I am deeply committed to continuing our work together to ensure every student has access to the best possible education. II believe it is vital to offer a wide range of programs in our schools-including strong academics, extracurricular opportunities, dual credit and work experience programming-all of which equip students for future studies and successful careers. By providing these diverse pathways, we not only empower students to succeed, but we also strengthen our schools and our entire community.

.One of my proudest achievements has been the implementation of student trustees. By including student voices, we’ve gained invaluable insights that have shaped our policies and improved the learning environment. Experiencing the public-school division firsthand has given me a unique perspective on the needs and challenges our students face. Beyond my roles as a parent, trustee, and chair, I’ve been an active volunteer in our schools, working alongside teachers and staff to support our students.

2. What are your top three priorities for your division, and how would you work to meet those needs?

Looking ahead, my priorities remain focused on enhancing student success, making every dollar count for all students, and supporting our dedicated teachers. Together, we can build an even brighter future for our students and our community.

During my term, I oversaw a critical shift in our division’s financial priorities, ensuring that funding is directed back into the classroom, where it has the most direct impact on our students. I was instrumental in prioritizing this reallocation to enhance the learning experience for every child in our division.

In achieving these priorities, the primary responsibility of a school trustee is governance: supporting our teachers, listening to their needs, learning from their classroom expertise, finding solutions, and advocating for them at the provincial level. It’s about providing the resources and support they need to excel.

3. How would you aim to attract and retain students within your division?

My primary focus is on attracting and retaining students by cultivating an inclusive and dynamic learning environment. We have expanded access to affordable academies, including those in the arts, STEM, and sports options. These programs ensure that every student is provided with the opportunities, skills, and experiences necessary to achieve academic and personal excellence. Over the past four years, I have been a dedicated advocate for the implementation of these academies and for securing equitable, affordable access for all students to support their success in both learning and development.

I remain actively engaged in the schools I am designated to, building meaningful relationships with students’ families and fostering strong connections within the school community. I believe that these relationships are essential to creating a supportive environment where our schools can thrive and succeed.
