1. Please provide a short biography. Why have you chosen to run for trustee?

I’m Wesley Paterson, CMC, Senior Management Consultant and President of Paterson Consulting Inc. For over two decades, I’ve specialized in organizational excellence, corporate training, and professional development. As a Certified Management Consultant with expertise in governance, strategic planning, and adult education, I’ve helped numerous organizations optimize their operations and develop their workforce. I’m a keynote speaker, DisruptHR presenter, and recipient of the 2025 CMC Canada Project of the Year Silver Award.

During our summer vacation, someone mentioned to me that nobody had put their name forward for Medicine Hat Public School Division trustee. I thought it was sad that no one was stepping up. My late mentor instilled in me ten powerful two letter words: “IF IT IS TO BE IT IS UP TO ME.” After researching the trustee duties, I decided to put my name forward. My extensive experience in governance, training, and organizational development uniquely positions me to serve our education system effectively.

2. What are your top three priorities for your division, and how would you work to meet those needs?

First, fiscal responsibility and operational excellence – applying my consulting expertise to ensure every tax dollar delivers maximum educational value while maintaining sustainable budgets.

Second, workforce development and teacher retention – leveraging my corporate training and adult education background to create professional development programs that support and retain quality educators, ensuring they have the tools, training, and support needed to excel.

Third, student-centered innovation – implementing evidence-based strategies that prepare students for tomorrow’s workforce while maintaining strong academic foundations. This includes expanding career pathways and practical skills training.

I would work collaboratively with fellow trustees, administrators, and stakeholders, using proven consulting methodologies to identify challenges, develop solutions, and measure outcomes effectively.

3. How would you aim to attract and retain students within your division?

To attract and retain students, I would focus on creating an educational environment that’s both academically excellent and personally engaging. This means developing diverse programming that meets varied student interests – from advanced academics to trades preparation. By applying my workforce development expertise, we can ensure students see clear pathways from classroom to career.

I’d advocate for enhanced partnerships with local businesses and post-secondary institutions, creating mentorship opportunities and practical experiences. Additionally, we must ensure our schools provide supportive environments where every student feels valued and has access to the resources they need to succeed, whether that’s academic support, mental health services, or career guidance.
