When it comes to unique culinary experiences, this province of ours never fails to surprise us. Seriously, people really underestimate Alberta’s food scene. The thing is, if you’re not looking in the right places, you could miss the best food. Some of the best, most authentic, and most delicious spots are tucked in unassuming spaces, unexpected locations, and–more often than not–right under your nose.

So, today, we’re heading over to Cochrane, Alberta, for some unreal Nepalese food that you probably didn’t know you’ve been craving. Aama Nepalese Cuisine is creating a lot of buzz, and for good reason. Hidden in plain sight in a small plaza, it brings you unforgettable dishes, the friendliest of greetings, and so much charm.

This family-owned and operated restaurant offers a modern twist on authentic Nepalese cuisine. Its menu includes mouth-watering momos and spiced curries, and it has captured the hearts of locals and tourists alike. If you’re unsure what momos are, just do yourself a favour and order them. Regardless of what you order, you can’t go wrong unless you decide not to check this place out. That would be a big mistake.

Conveniently located on Horse Creek Road, near Cochrane’s cute downtown, Aama’s energy will make you feel right at home the second you step inside. The decor is simple yet warm, with nods to Nepalese culture sprinkled throughout, setting the tone for the coming meal. The intimate size of the restaurant makes it ideal for a cozy dinner with your friends or family.

The atmosphere is further elevated by the friendly service and staff, led by Chef Gyanendra, fondly known as Chef G, along with his wife, Tara. With over 19 years of experience preparing traditional Nepalese dishes, Chef G is passionate about creating delicious dining experiences that bring people together and keep them coming back for more. Born in Nepal and now based in Calgary, Chef G has honed his cooking skills across Europe, North America, and the Middle East, showcasing his talents in prestigious hotel chains such as the Hyatt Regency, Hilton Hotels, and Fairmont Hotels.

Chef G advocates for fresh, locally sourced ingredients in every dish, ensuring the best possible flavours in every bite. When he’s not in the kitchen, he enjoys spending time with his family, visiting local markets, and exploring the Rockies. His commitment to excellence is evident in every plate served at Aama, where he combines his worldly knowledge with a deep respect for traditional Nepalese recipes.

Aama, which means “mother” in Nepalese, is a tribute to Chef G’s beloved late mother. Since its quiet opening in 2022, Aama has steadily gained recognition for its thoughtfully curated menu and above-and-beyond service, in fact, it was recently voted Avenue Magazine’s Best New Restaurant of 2024.

Their menu features dishes such as momos, thupka, and Nepali Thali, but what truly sets Aama apart is their specialty plates served with Yak meat. Yak is a popular meat in Nepal, known for its lean protein and unique flavour. Aama also has a wide selection of vegetarian and vegan dishes, ensuring something exceptional for all food lovers.

Aama Nepalese Cuisine isn't just a place to eat—it's a place to experience the heart and soul of Nepalese cooking. The dishes are crafted carefully, using fresh ingredients and traditional recipes passed down through generations. The exceptional food, friendly service, and cozy environment make it a worthwhile dining experience.

Whether you're a local or just passing through, Aama Nepalese Cuisine reminds us how quality food can warm our hearts, even on the coldest winter days. The next time you're in Cochrane, skip the ordinary and treat yourself to Aama. Be sure to come hungry and be prepared to fall in love with this beloved spot.
