EDMONTON – Alberta is predicting a $2.4-billion budget surplus for its petro-powered economy this year.
The budget is the first under United Conservative Party Premier Danielle Smith and the last before a provincial election expected in May.
The budget plans to take a big bite out of the province’s debt and prevent deficits when oil booms go bust.
It also includes billions for new schools, as well as health-care worker recruitment and retention.
It calls for more ambulances, Crown prosecutors and money to expand training for in-demand fields, including health, energy, business and innovation.
The budget, delivered today by Finance Minister Travis Toews, also promises a cap on post-secondary tuition increases starting in 2024.
More coming.
