Miller signs ATO deal with Penguins AHL team

Medicine Hat’s Ryan Miller will get his first look at pro hockey.

The Portland Winterhawks captain signed an amateur tryout agreement with the American Hockey League’s Wilkes-Barre-Scranton Penguins on Wednesday.

Miller was drafted 130th overall by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the 2025 NHL Draft. The 18-year-old was named the 50th captain in Winterhawks history this season, putting up a career campaign in the WHL with 30 goals and 75 points in 65 games.

The Winterhawks were swept in the first round of the WHL Playoffs by the Everett Silvertips, he had a goal and an assist in the series.

Miller is eligible to immediately play for the AHL Penguins for the remainder of the regular season and playoffs. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton has clinched a spot in the AHL Playoffs, sitting second in the Atlantic division. They have five more regular season games, starting tonight in Bridgeport, Con. against the Islanders.
