RCMP released a public service announcement Tuesday encouraging homeowners, rural property owners and business owners to register security cameras with the RCMP’s national database.

The Community Assisted Policing Through Use of Recorded Evidence, or CAPTURE, program is a voluntary registry that lets officers know where security cameras are located throughout the community.

This knowledge can assist police in identifying potential evidence during an investigation in a time-saving manner that can “make a real difference in solving crime.”

The primary objective is to build a mapping program of all security cameras in a community.

RCMP says participation is completely voluntary and you will not be required to hand over video footage or images, and police will not physically remove any equipment.

Personal information is kept secure and is not publicly available, officers will only contact you if your footage may help in an investigation.

More information and a link to register for the CAPTURE program can be found online at ruralalbertacapture.ca.
