The Medicine Hat Boxing Club was in action last week at the national level.

The local club sent three boxers, Nate Vossler, Jacob Walne and Quincy McComeau to the Canadian Championships in Calgary. Medicine Hat coach Kerry Fahlman was one of two provincial coaches taking care of 45 athletes.

Walne defeated Tyson Bowen from Nova Scotia but lost to Jakob Brandt from Saskatchewan in the semifinals. He previously beat Brandt twice before but had an off day, Fahlman says, finishing with Bronze in the 60kg Junior division.

Vossler had a tough draw, Fahlman says, boxing national champ Logan Walsh in his first match. Fahlman says it was a toe-to-toe battle from start to finish with Vossler ending up on the losing side. It was his best fight of his career, Fahlman says, coming in the U23 Elite division.

McComeau defeated B.C.’s Lusha Bikoshvili in his first match to move on to the final, where he stopped Nova Scotia’s Connor Nauftt in the second round to win Gold in the U23 65kg.

Overall Alberta boxers won 16 gold and nine silvers.
