Cypress County council opts to enlarge signage for fire station locations, despite already being within regulation

Cypress County is aiming for greater visibility through updated signage for anyone looking for fire stations in the region.

Currently, stations No. 1, 4 and 7 are marked with 70×70-centimetre signs, but a motion was approved Tuesday by council to purchase and instal larger signs, 120×120 cm.

Administration had recommended a motion to not move forward with the signs, as current ones are within regulation and the project is estimated to cost $3,150.

However, Coun. Dustin Vossler said he considers signage a matter of safety, and that since it had been identified that current signage was perhaps inadequate, especially at high speeds or in low-visibility conditions, he felt the change is necessary.

Funding for the small project will come from the Fire Services Contract Services budget line item, which was noted to not always be used and historically had never been exceeded. As such, the project is not an added strain on the budget.
