Building permits continue to outpace 2025 numbers

Construction in Medicine Hat is continuing at a healthy pace after a hot start to the new year.

Commercial alterations continue to account for the majority of the value of new permits in 2026, with 10 permits issued for construction totalling $1.2 million in added value.

February’s additions bring the total value of the 20 commercial alterations approved in 2026 up to $13.8 million. By the same time last year, 10 commercial alterations worth just under $500,000 had been approved.

The total value of all permits issued in February was $2.9 million, more than this time last year, when the value of the month’s permits totalled $2 million.

February 2026 also saw a higher average value for permits granted, averaging at $89,143 across 33 permits compared to $58,037 over 35 permits last year.

Only one permit was issued for a new single-family home in February. One permit was also issued for an apartment with two units.

Six new residential units have been approved so far this year. By the end of February 2025, eight new units had been approved.
