The Medicine Hat Police Commission is launching its annual public survey to gather community input on policing and safety.

Survey topics will include road safety, municipal enforcement, criminal investigations, uniformed officers and questions about policing as a whole in Medicine Hat, as well as a section on the local police commission.

The commission says residents will be randomly selected to participate in a telephone interview or they will be invited to complete an online survey.

Responses will be kept confidential and will not be shared with MHPS, however all responses will be summarized and that data will be provided to the MHPS.

Results are used to compare findings from previous surveys and will be shared publicly during a police commission meeting scheduled in June.

“Our goal is to better understand and respond to community concerns about public safety in our city,” said police commission chair Paul Carolan. “The commission will use the results to support our work with the Medicine Hat Police Service as we develop the service’s strategic plan and our objectives for the next business cycle.”

The commission will use a third-party strategic and market research firm to conduct the survey independently.
