Rattler Roundup: Rattlers race to multiple medals at ACAC track championships

The Rattlers men’s relay team hit the podium twice at the ACAC Indoor Track Championship this weekend.

MHC, led by Askia Tahrou, Christian Panagay, and twins Daniel and Joshua Friesen, raced to a pair of podium-worthy finishes at the championships in Edmonton.

The men’s 4 x 200m team finished second in a school record time of 1:37.36, one second behind winner SAIT Polytechnic. In the 4 x 400m relay, the MHC men placed third in a season’s best time of 4:40.80, behind Red Deer Polytechnic and Lethbridge Polytechnic, respectively.

Individually, Daniel Friesen also claimed a podium spot, finishing second in the 300m with a school record and personal best time of 36.49. Logan Pancoast ran two distance races, finishing fifth in the 3,000m with a new school record and seventh in the 1,500m. Tahrou also tallied a point in the standings, with an eighth place finish in the 600m.

The Rattlers women were led by Reyna Woodruff, who had two personal best times in both the 1,500m and 3,000m. Woodruff placed fifth in the 3,000m and sixth in the 1,500m.

She also ran legs on both MHC relay teams who finished seventh in the 4 x200 and seventh in the 4 x 400m. For her efforts, Woodruff was named the ACAC Indoor Track Female Rookie of the Year.

Collectively the Rattler men finished sixth among the 11 ACAC teams. The MHC women were eighth.

Futsal

The Rattlers futsal teams finished the regular season with a trio of games on the road.

The women’s team picked up a pair of wins, beating the Ambrose University Lions 4-2 on Friday and topping the Olds College Broncos 5-1 Saturday. They lost 4-1 later in the day to the SAIT Trojans.

Against Ambrose, Charley Indzeoski scored twice with an assist, Nicoly Souza had a goal and an assist and Alexis Ratke found the back of the net. Abby Lalach and Rylan Morhart combined for 20 saves.

Tyler Cimolini scored twice against Olds College, all three of Ratke, Indzeoski and Souza had a goal and an assist. Lalach made 30 saves.

Alivia Rybchinski scored the Rattlers lone goal against SAIT, Lalach and Morhart combined for 20 saves.

MHC’s men’s team lost 7-6 to Ambrose University on Friday before they beat Olds College 12-8. They tied SAIT 3-3 on Saturday in their last game before playoffs.

Aleksa Bijelic scored twice against Ambrose, Aminja Abbe had a goal and an assist and all three of Tata Mugisha, Joao Cintra and De’Shaunt Gelinas-Ca found the back of the net. Noah Scolly made 13 saves.

Against Olds College, Bijelic had four goals, Joao Nascimento had a hat trick, Cintra ha da goal and four assists, De’Shaunt Gelinas-Ca had a goal and three assists and Connor Grindle had a goal and two helpers. Tayvin Kelemen and Maksymilian Slaweta combined for 13 saves.

In the tie against SAIT, Tata Mugisha, Bijelic and De’Shaunt Gelinas-Ca scored, Slaweta made 17 saves.

The Rattlers men’s (6-1-1) and women’s (6-1-1) futsal teams will host the ACAC championships on March 20-22.
