Upcoming nature walk putting focus on prairie forests

By medicinehatnews on March 10, 2026.

The Medicine Hat Interpretive Centre is taking a long look at the distant past with its latest announced program: Prairie Forests, Past and Present.

“Have you ever wondered where coal comes from, and what the landscape and environment would have been like at that time?” assistant chief interpreter Mhairi Donnelly asks. “How big were these trees that they could support giant ground sloths and saber-toothed cats?”

Participants in this free nature walk, which will take place Mar. 21 from 1-2 p.m., will learn more about these great forests during the program, as well as attempt to discern the age of a few trees along the way.

As space is limited, registration is required for this program. Those interested are asked to secure a spot by calling the nature line 403-529-6225.
