This school year 650 First Nations, Métis and Inuit students are enrolled within Medicine Hat Public School Division, which continues to welcome more Indigenous students year over year.
According to a recent FNMI program update presentation provided to school board trustees, the division has experienced a year-over-year growth of FNMI students from 318 in 2018, an increase of 332 students in eight years.
Last year MHPSD also reported its highest graduation rate among FNMI students, with 40 of 45 students, or 89 per cent, receiving a high school diploma at the end of the 2024-25 school year.
Trustees were also provided updates on several large initiatives held by the division, including Kiskihkeyimowin, an on-hand learning experience held in partnership with Medicine Hat College, and the Miywasin Friendship Centre.
Members of the FNMI team also spoke about student involvement in Orange Shirt Day and a learning opportunity from former Miss World Canada Emma Morrision and Corner Gas star actor Lorne Cardinal.
MHPSD has emphasized actions toward truth and reconciliation within its strategic priorities and continues to offer numerous traditional activities within its classrooms, including cultural presentation, drum-making, beading and games.
