The Alberta Teachers Association is in court Wednesday and Thursday this week for an injunction hearing regarding the controversial Bill 2.

This week’s hearing will determine whether the Back to School Act should be suspended pending the outcome of the ATA’s broader legal challenge.

Whether the court rules in favour of the injunction, the full hearing remains scheduled for the week of Sept. 21, 2026.

The UCP government used the notwithstanding clause to impose a collective agreement that nearly 90 per cent of Alberta teachers rejected in September, sending 51,000 striking teachers back to work.

In a statement released Wednesday, the ATA says it will evaluate the outcome of these proceedings with the guidance of its legal counsel as it pursues its challenge to Bill 2, and “its provisions that trample the fundamental freedoms of teachers.”

A decision on the injunction is not expected until mid-March.
