Medicine Hat College will receive $2 million to plan and design a proposed Centre of Community Wellness for the province in the 2026 Budget.
According to the college the proposed Centre for Community Wellness will provide wellness services on campus, which are currently delivered from trailers, isolated rooms and off-site locations, and aligns with the college’s top capital priority.
The Centre for Community Wellness will also allow the college to expand its capacity and training in health and community service programs.
These include social work, practical nursing, health-care aide and addictions counselling programs.
“The Centre for Community Wellness represents a transformational opportunity for our region,” says Kevin Shufflebotham, president and CEO. “We are grateful for this planning investment, which allows us to take the next steps towards building a facility that meets the wellness needs of our students and community while preparing the next generation of health and social services professionals.”
The new wellness centre will also provide student support including counselling, medical services, Indigenous student supports and childcare.
“The CCW will create a seamless, student-centred wellness hub and expand experiential learning and simulation spaces aligned with Alberta’s workforce priorities,” reads a media release.
Shufflebotham says the college will continue working with the province and community partners to secure the remaining capital required to construct the new facility.
