The City of Medicine Hat in 2025 sold 42 single -family lots and nine duplex lots in developed subdivisions, for total sales of $5.1 million.
Figures were presented to members of the energy, land and environment committee Thursday during a presentation on the 2025 report on land and real estate sales and acquisitions.
According to the report, the sale of 49 lots has been generated from lots in three subdivisions – Ranchlands 3B, Saamis Heights 7 and Southlands 6 A-C.
This was the first presented to elected officials under the Land and Real Estate Policy and Producers, adopted by council last September and covering transactions where all conditions have been met, payments are complete and the title has been transferred.
The modernized land and real estate strategy seeks to maximize the economic, social and environmental benefits of land assets in three main areas: Leverage the land and real estate portfolio to create value, be adaptable to land development opportunities and lead with proactive marketing and sales.
The report also includes information for more than 150 individual leases managed by the city in 2025. All leases approved were either renewals of existing locations nearing expiry or re-assigned to a new tenant.
There were no acquisitions approved by the administration last year.
City staff explained the new policy comes from the amalgamation of two city land groups that handled real estate acquisitions and sales prior to the updated policy.
This allowed the city to establish a team of experts to utilize their full skill sets around real estate.
The City of Medicine Hat has more than 200 unique properties which consist of agricultural, community use, residential lots, multi-family parcels, mixed-use parcels, commercial parcels and former city facilities within a land area of more than 5,000 acres.
