newsdesk@medicinehatnews.com The province announced this week a multi-million dollar investment into a new drug preparation centre it says will improve medication access in southern Alberta. The government of Alberta is spending $61 million over three years to construct the new centre in Calgary, which will centralize preparation and distribution of pharmaceuticals in the region. The new centre will replace an aging facility the province says no longer meets modern medical needs. Construction is slated to begin in 2026. “Building a purpose-designed facility ensures Albertans can access safe, reliable medications when they need them, while supporting a sustainable health system,” said Minister of Hospital and Surgical Health Services Matt Jones. The new facility will be operated by Alberta Health Services and will primarily service hospitals. It will also provide for continuing care facilities, mental health and addiction facilities and will have capacity to support other publicly funded providers in the future. “This project will enhance pharmaceutical services in hospitals and health-care facilities, creating hundreds of construction-related jobs, while supporting more efficient and cost-effective health care for Albertans,” said Minister of Infrastructure Martin Long. 8
