Albertans will gather today in Calgary, Edmonton and Medicine Hat to celebrate the province’s vital and inseparable role within the Canadian federation, according to organizers of an anti-separatist event.

Local organizer Brittany Doctor says while the event was initially conceived by partners in Edmonton and Calgary, she’s pleased to be including the Gas City as well.

“They reached out to me and asked us to socialize it, and I said that I would absolutely socialize it, but asked if we could also participate and elevate their celebration,” said Doctor. She explained that organizers felt as if they could not sit back and allow the country to continue to “be torn apart” by ongoing separatist talking points.

Starting at 2 p.m, those interested can head to St. John’s Presbyterian Church to meet with other community members. The event will feature two speakers, as well as live music by Ron Mason.

“The first is Eldon Weasel Child, who will be speaking to us on the significance of treaties in the context of Canada,” said Doctor. “The second speaker is Jim Groom. He’s a political science professor who will be speaking to us about why Alberta will never be the 51st state, and some constitutional tie-ins on that subject matter.”

Doctor says the event, the “Alberta is Canada Celebration,” is a non-partisan and non-faith-based gathering, intended for anyone and everyone to come together and share a sentiment of preservation and national unity.

In Calgary, organizer Nicole Johnston adds, “We are all treaty partners here. Unity doesn’t come from division. It comes from honouring our commitments, respecting treaty rights and working together in good faith for the benefit of all.”
