newsdesk@medicinehatnews.com A new provincial online portal opened this month in its beta mode that provides real-time data on the current labour market in Alberta and is designed to help employers plan for the future. The new portal offers key indicators on unemployment and employment rates, labour force numbers, average wages, trends over a time person, provincial comparison and employment growth across occupations and industries as well as short and long-term market forecasts. The website allows employers to compare pay rates against available wage data and analyze employment trends and demographics, as well as shortages in skilled workers. This new data portal will expand on the labour market information already provided by the government online. According to information provided, the province’s unemployment rate in January was 6.4 per cent, which represents more than 2,600,000 Albertans and the average weekly wage for workers was $1,419.21. The most recent data from November 2025 reports a 2.9 per cent job vacancy rate, which represents 62,000 available job vacancies. This data will be recorded over time and used as a toll to analyze employment trends, compositions, industry growth and shortages and see how Alberta compares to other provinces. This information will also better identify current in-demand jobs in the province, which can be used to enhance skills and training programs. Currently the portal is in its beta testing stage which means the province is collecting feedback from users to make continuous improvement to the website before it is officially rolled out. A survey for the portal can be found by visiting labour-market.alberta.ca, available for all Albertans to provide feedback. 12
