TORONTO — The Broadway smash “Operation Mincemeat,” musical adaptations of “The Karate Kid” and “13 Going on 30” and a “docu-concert” about the wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald are among the productions coming to Toronto stages in the next year.
Mirvish announced Tuesday the seven shows in its main subscription season, in addition to 12 non-subscription productions.
“Operation Mincemeat,” a Second World War-set comedy that quickly developed a cult following will have its Canadian premiere in Toronto in October.
“The Karate Kid: The Musical” is due to hit the Mirvish stage in September, and starting in November, Toronto will host the North American debut of “13 Going on 30: The Musical,” which opened at the Manchester Opera House and is bound for London’s West End after the Toronto engagement.
The subscription season also includes the docu-concert “Inside the Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald,” which tells the story of the doomed freighter through the music of Gordon Lightfoot.
Rounding out the season are “Hell’s Kitchen,” the Alicia Keys jukebox musical, Agatha Christie’s murder mystery “The Mousetrap,” which has run on London’s West End for more than 70 years and is now crossing the Atlantic for the first time, and “Salesman in China,” based on the true story of Arthur Miller’s trip to Beijing in 1983 to direct a production of “Death of a Salesman.”
Newly announced non-subscription productions include “Paranormal Activity,” a play based on the hit film franchise; “The Secret Chord: A Leonard Cohen Experience,” which tells the singer-songwriter’s life story; and “Dirty Dancing: The Musical,” which is set to music from the 1987 film.
