Medicine Hat will join several communities in rallying spirits for local recall campaigns Saturday.
Rallies are intended to increase public awareness and demonstrate the growing grassroots momentum behind the movement, especially as many MLAs adjust their schedules in the face of mounting public pressure, according to organizers.
“The timing isn’t lost on people,” said Brittany Doctor, a leader with the recall effort for premier and Brooks-Medicine Hat MLA Danielle Smith. “We’re seeing MLAs suddenly show up more often, but avoiding great opportunities to engage with constituents who are gathering, connecting and talking about recall.”
“Smith and the UCP caucus rarely advertise events publicly in advance; most are organized through internal membership lists, further isolating our community.”
Organizers add that many of these appearances are “too little, too late” and avoid overlap with rallies, protests or similar events.
Here in the Gas City, rallying begins at 11a.m. at 1299 Trans-Canada Way, where it will run until noon. Throughout the province, varying events will happen throughout the day for several ridings.
“While each recall effort is community-led, organizers say the rallies share a common message: Albertans want transparency, accountability and representation,” said organizers. “Organizers have been hearing consistent concerns from residents about affordability, health care, education and disability support. They want their voices heard, and their representatives held accountable.”
