Applications for the provincial Teacher Advisory Council opened Monday, inviting teachers and principals from across Alberta to take part in shaping the future of education policy.

The council will bring together up to 15 educators representing a diverse range of school settings, roles and communities to share their perspectives with the minister of Education and Childcare.

Teachers will be asked to share expertise and stories of their frontline experience.

Council appointments made by ministerial order will run for a duration of 18 months. Teachers serving on the council will be eligible for reappointment after their first term.

Members of the council will be required to attend online meetings outside of school hours.

The appointments are unpaid and voluntary.

“Teachers understand the realities of today’s classrooms. Their expertise is essential to addressing class size and classroom complexity,” said Minister of Education and Childcare Demetrios Nicolaides. “The Teacher Advisory Council ensures teachers have a direct voice as we work together to strengthen education for Alberta students.”

Teachers and principals interested in serving on the council can apply online at the Government of Alberta webpage. The deadline for applications is Feb. 13.

All appointments will be made by Nicolaides.
