newsdesk@medicinehatnews.com Albertans can now nominate an individual, organization or group which has enhanced the wellbeing and quality of life of seniors in the annual Minister’s Seniors Service Awards. The government opened the nomination window Friday and is asking residents to submit nominations for people and groups with a positive impact on seniors and their communities, provided a needed service, or look to diversify and enhance the quality of services already available to seniors. Since 1998 the Minister’s Seniors Service Awards have recognized approximately 200 groups and individuals of all ages for service toward seniors. “Seniors are at the heart of Alberta’s communities and it’s important we recognize those who work every day to support them,” said Jason Nixon, minister of assisted living and social services. “The Minister’s Seniors Service Awards are an opportunity to honour the Albertans who go above and beyond to ensure seniors are supported.” Key awards to be presented this year include the Alice Modin Award, which recognizes a senior individual or couple for exceptional commitment to their community and the province through long-term volunteerism. Additionally, the Stronger at Every Age Award honours those who have created inclusive and accessible communities where aging citizens can live well, and includes building age-friendly infrastructure and improving accessibility and transportation. Last year Daphne Anstey-Martin of Brooks was one of seven individuals who received the 2024-25 Minister’s Senior Service Award for her contribution to the Brooks & District Seniors Outreach. The deadline to submit online and mail-in nominations is April 30. All details can be found by visiting alberta.ca/ministers-seniors-service-awards. Last year the government received 93 nominations from Albertans. 11
