The Medicine Hat Cubs are tuning up for the playoffs with a charitable weekend.

The Cubs’ last two home games of the regular season comes this weekend, starting tonight against the Okotoks Bisons, wrapping up Sunday against the Mountainview Colts.

Tonight’s game, a 7:30 p.m. start at the Kinplex, is First Responders Appreciation night. All first responders, active or retiree, will get free access with authorized ID to the South division matchup.

It’s an initiative general manager Randy Wong says the team’s board has wanted to execute for a while, recognizing the effort of first responders in the community.

“We know the incredible job they do to support the community, and the Cubs have always been about trying to give back to the community, so we quickly put this one together where we invite all first responders to our game for free,” Wong said. “It’s just a small token of our gratitude that we can show. Hopefully they’ll come and support the cause and support the Cubs at the same time.”

The game will also feature limited edition team hats, sold by Redcliff Youth Centre for $25, with all proceeds going to fund the Youth Centre’s Action Society for Youth. The funds will help support the centre’s prevention and life-skill programs and events, while also helping create positive opportunities for young people in the community.

The Cubs have worked with the Youth Centre in the past, helping to keep their doors open, Wong says.

“They’re a purposeful organization that is trying to do right and work with young kids, so we’re hopeful people come out and support them as well,” Wong said.

Sunday’s game, their last of the regular season, gets underway at 3 p.m. and will feature a partnership with Medicine Hat College’s sports management class. The contest is a fundraiser for the PJs for a Purpose Program, helping raise funds to create a nature-themed room in Medicine Hat hospital’s paediatric unit.

They will have tables set up with up to $2,000 in raffle prizes, with proceeds going to support the program. A percentage of ticket sales and concession sales will also go to the program.

The Cubs have partnered with the sports management program for multiple years, and getting the opportunity to also raise funds for the hospital’s program was an easy yes, Wong says.

“They’re doing the right thing and they’re trying to raise some funds for a good cause,” Wong said. “It supports the college, the college supports the hospital, and what better feeling can you have by helping more than one organization at once.”

The Cubs (23-8-3) enter the weekend with first in the South division clinched, they’re three points back of the Red Deer Vipers for first in the HJHL, both teams with two games to play. The division win is the first for the Cubs since the 2001-02 season, a welcomed achievement but one they look to build off.

“As proud of I am for the guys achieving this, we have to quickly forget about it and move on because once playoff starts, it’s a whole new season,” Wong said.
