Coun. Stuart Young has been appointed as the next deputy mayor, beginning next month, following a motion Monday evening in council chambers.
As acting mayor, a member of council will temporarily assume the powers, duties and responsibilities of the mayor if they are absent.
“Honestly, it’s just a procedural thing, we always have to have an acting mayor,” said Young, who will be taking over the role from Coun. Yusuf Mohammed.
Young will serve as acting mayor from Feb. 3 to March 19.
“Sometimes things take people away from Medicine Hat that are vacations or other obligations and that is occurring now so we want to just make a switch,” explained Mayor Linnsie Clark. “Everyone will each have a turn in the rotation to do both deputy and acting (mayor), but the timing works out better if we switch it.”
The appointment was the only new order of business during councils public meeting on Monday.
