The Cubs lost 3-2 in overtime Saturday at Strathmore to the Wheatland Kings before rebounding on home ice, blanking the Cochrane Generals 5-0 on Sunday. Josiah Jackson and Blake Girard scored in the first period of Saturday’s loss, Austin Derzaph had two assists. Marlo DeRosa started the game, stopping all 20 shots he faced before being lifted after receiving a five-minute major and game-misconduct penalty for head contact. Kayne Wright took over in net, making 11 saves. Wright stopped all 23 shots he faced Sunday against Cochrane for his first HJHL shutout. Mason Osinski, captain Kyle Woolridge, Jesse Klimosko, Ethan Burgeson and Makhi Carriere each scored in the win, Derzaph had three assists. The Cubs (22-7-3) remain atop the South division, six points ahead of Strathmore (20-11-1) and seven ahead of Cochrane (19-11-2). They have two games on the road this weekend, the penultimate weekend of the regular season. They have the Red Deer Vipers on Friday and Ponoka Stampeders on Saturday. The Cubs’ last two regular season games come at the Kinplex, they’ll host the Okotoks Bisons on Jan. 30 (7:30 p.m.) and the Ponoka Stampeders on Feb. 1 (3 p.m.). 11
