newsdesk@medicinehatnews.com Rajan Sawhney, Alberta’s minister of Indigenous relations, and Shane Getson, parliamentary secretary for economic corridor development and chair of the Alberta India Advisory Committee, are traveling to India for three weeks for a variety of meetings with foreign diplomats. According to a release the trip will include several meetings with government officials, private-sector leaders and potential investors in eight cities. A key highlight includes Sawhney’s participation in the 2026 India Energy Week, which is an international forum of energy leaders around the world who will be gathering in Goa, India from Jan. 27-30. Sawhney is also a sitting member on the province’s Northwest Coast Oil Pipeline advisory team and plans to showcase ways Alberta can alleviate India’s growing need for oil, gas and petrochemicals. “Securing long-term opportunities for Alberta to export its energy to this key region will create jobs, drive economic growth and deliver lasting prosperity for Indigenous partners and all people living in Alberta and in Canada,” said Sawhney. During travels Getson will meet with regional investors and business leaders in energy, technology, agriculture, agri-food, manufacturing and tourism. “This mission will provide an opportunity to build strong, long-lasting economic corridors between Alberta and India,” said Getson. “I look forward to unearthing new ways Alberta and India can deepen our mutually beneficial trade and investment ties, while promoting everything that makes Alberta a natural partner of choice across sectors.” The pair will travel to Mumbai for meetings and roundtables with local business leaders and government officials until Saturday when they travel to Goa for Energy Week. Getson will make a detour to Surat for two days on Jan. 24 to attend the Southern Gujarat Chamber of Commerce and Industry conference, before returning to Mumbai the next day. On Jan. 26 the pair will attend the India Energy Week Alberta delegation dinner, followed by three days of meetings with business leaders and attending the international forum. On Jan. 29 Getson will travel to Kolkata to participate in the Alberta India Chamber of Commerce roundtable followed by a trip to New Delhi on Jan. 31 to attend the Alberta India Chamber of Commerce event. On Jan. 30 Sawhney will meet with business leaders and government officials in New Delhi until Feb 2, while also participating in the Alberta India Chamber of Commerce event. Getson will then travel to Bhubaneswar for a port tour and meetings with leaders and government officials, and will travel back to Alberta on Feb. 4. Sawhney will then travel to Chandigarh for a round of meetings with local business leaders and government officials on Feb. 3 for two days before travelling back to Alberta on Feb. 5.
