ELGIN MANN

ELGIN MANN 1935 ~ 2025 Elgin Basil Mann passed away at St. Joseph’s Home – Carmel Hospice in Medicine Hat on Wednesday, December 31, 2025, at the age of 90 years. He leaves behind his son, Elgin Junior and his family and many extended family members. From the early 50’s and 60’s, Elgin’s passion was music and he made many friends while he persued his dream. He played throughout Alberta and Saskatchewan with his two brothers, Melvin and Jimmy forming the band, ‘The Mann Brothers’. Elgin then went to Nashville to record his songs, including the well known, “It Takes A Good Woman.” His local recordings included, “White Mountain”, “North Star Terry Fox”, “92 Hat Tricks” and “Instrumental Pele”. In the 60’s and 70’s, he then worked as a handyman at the Park Lane and Catalini Hotels. Elgin was a man who was true to his word and was a loyal friend to many who will all miss him. RODNEY HARRY “ROD” SCHMIDT

RODNEY HARRY “ROD” SCHMIDT 1950 2026 It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Rodney Harry Schmidt, aged 75, who left this world on January 3, 2026, in Medicine Hat, Alberta. Born on October 3, 1950, in Empress, Alberta, Rod was a devoted husband, loving father, and cherished grandfather who touched the lives of all who knew him. Rod was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Harry and Remona Schmidt, whose guidance and love shaped the man he became. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years, Ivy Schmidt, a partnership characterized by unwavering support and deep affection. Their marriage, which began on August 4, 1972, was a beautiful journey filled with shared dreams, laughter, and an unbreakable bond. Together, Rod and Ivy raised three wonderful children: Keith, Kelly, and Kane (Tanya). Rod took immense pride in his family, and his legacy continues through his grandchildren, Jennica Bacon, Alexander Schmidt, and Zach and Taya Schmidt. Rod was known for his hard work and loyalty. As a smart businessman and a provider for his family, he embodied the spirit of hotel owner and farmer: a “Jack of All Trades.” He had a passion for travel, often taking his family on adventures that created lasting memories. Fishing was another of Rod’s great loves; always hoping for the next big catch. He also enjoyed attending auctions, where he would eagerly seek out hidden treasures. These hobbies reflected his zest for life and his adventurous spirit. Rod’s life will be celebrated at Saamis Memorial Funeral Chapel, #1 Dunmore Road SE, Medicine Hat, AB on Saturday, January 10, 2026, at 1:00 PM. BARRIE MYERS

BARRIE MYERS August 3, 1937 ~ January 1, 2026
It is with a broken heart that Marlene announces the passing of her beloved husband, Barrie Maynard Myers. He passed away at River Ridge Seniors Village in Medicine Hat on Thursday, January 1, 2026, at the age of 88 years. Along with Marlene, left to cherish Barrie’s memory are his children: son, Kevin (Shelly) and their family, Brenden (Sasha) (Bella and Scarlett), Kerry (Brendan) (Shea and Quinn); daughter, Kim (Chuck) Getz and their family, Dustin (Emma) (Rylee and Rheya) and Kaylee (Luke); siblings, Kenneth (Monique) and Bernice (Duke); Marlene’s siblings, Wayne (Dianne) Wareham and Bev (Wayne) Stanley as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Barrie was born and raised in Wawota, Saskatchewan, a place he always called home. A welder by trade, Barrie dedicated many years of his working life to Saskatchewan Minerals, where he was known for his strong work ethic, skill and reliability. Following his retirement, Barrie embraced a slower pace of life and found great enjoyment in woodworking and golf. Whether creating something with his hands or spending time on the course, he took pride in doing things well and savoured the simple pleasures of each day. He leaves behind many memories that will be cherished by those who knew and loved him.
A Celebration of Barrie’s life will be held at Cook Southland Funeral Chapel, 901 – 13 Street S.W., Medicine Hat on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. with Pastor Murray Jaster officiating. LILLIAN SCHAFER 1940 ~ 2026 Lillian “Lil” Margery Schafer of Medicine Hat, beloved wife of the late Benedict “Ben” Schafer, passed away peacefully, on Thursday, January 1, 2026, at the age of 85 years. She leaves to cherish her memory, two daughters, Terry (Bill) Fitterer, Sandra (Mark) Crane; three grandchildren, Shane Fitterer (Kaylea), Bailey (Tyson Zabel), Ashton (Bryden) Lutz; four great grandchildren, who she loved very much, Branko Matulin, Sebastian Matulin, Ozymandias Zabel, and Linden Lutz. Lillian is predeceased by her husband, Ben Schafer; her parents, Wilbert and Eva Jacober, and her sister, Jeanette. Lil worked in the dry-cleaning business for several years, she also had a second-hand clothing store. Lil loved being with her grand children, they were the sparkle in her eye. EDITH BURNISTON 1925 ~ 2026 Edith Mary Burniston, beloved wife of the late Lawrence “Larry” Burniston, passed away on Sunday, January 4, 2026, at the age of 100 years. She leaves to cherish her memory; four children, Gladys (Ed) Winder, Mary Meier, Richard (Debbie) Burniston, and Loreen Burniston; three grandchildren, Bev (Barry) Gutfriend, Larry (Danielle Reckseidler) Winder, and Bryan (Ashley) Litton; twelve great grandchildren, nine great great grandchildren, and two great great great grandchildren. Edith is predeceased by one son-in-law, Wayne Meier; two grand children, Peggy Carnegie (Meier), and Brent Meier; one great great grandchild, Ocean Oldford; one brother, John Gustafson, and one sister, Vera Holmes. Edith was born August 1, 1925, to Seth and Pheobe Gustafson in Medicine Hat. She lived in Medicine Hat for most of her life aside from the four years she lived in England during WWII. Edith worked at the glass factory, Sunnyside Haven, and for the City of Medicine Hat daycare. She liked to stay active in her yard, tending to her garden and flowers. Edith also enjoyed the gym and continued working out in her chair for as long as she could. ANIETA KIENZLE

ANIETA KIENZLE 1957 ~ 2026
Annette (Anieta) Johanna Maria (van Tryp) Kienzle, beloved wife of the late Rodger Dean Kienzle, passed away peacefully in Bow Island, Alberta on Sunday, January 4, 2026, at the age of 68 years. Anieta was born January 5,1957, in Taber, Alberta, the firstborn child of Paul and Jean van Tryp. She attended St. Michael’s School in Bow Island from 1962 to 1974, and graduated from the Dental Assistant program at SAIT in Calgary in early 1975. Anieta worked in Lethbridge for a short time before marrying Rodger on September 17, 1977, and together they moved out to the Kienzle family farm. Anieta worked alongside her husband and started her Avon career before they welcomed their two sons Jordan and Adam. Anieta and Rodger later left the farm and while living in Burdett, she went to work at Bow Island Dental and Bow Island Chiropractic.
Anieta was an avid Avon salesperson. There wasn’t a local trade show, community event or fundraiser where you wouldn’t see her smiling face and her table of products. She continued with her Avon business even after she moved to Medicine Hat and up until her passing.
Anieta also had a passion for photography and a keen eye for nature’s beauty. Many of her prints and photocards adorn the homes of her family and friends. She was always willing to photograph the important events in life and numerous special candid moments are documented, thanks to her.
Those left to mourn Anieta’s loss are her sons, Jordan and Adam, and her four grandsons, Austin, Zack, Parker, and Tyson Kienzle. She is also survived by her siblings, Joanne (Rick) Adair, Lisette Simon (Art Laubenstein), Wilma (Gerald) Struys, Anna-Marie (Warren) Bridge, Jack (Joanne) van Tryp, John (Natalie) van Tryp, Paul (Nora) van Tryp, as well as numerous nieces, nephews and their families.
Anieta was predeceased by her husband, Rodger Kienzle; nephew, Sean Claggett and parents, Paul and Jean van Tryp.
Family and friends will gather for prayers in St Michael’s Catholic Church (1113 1 St E, Bow Island, AB) on Friday, January 9, 2026, at 7:00 p.m. with Fr. Wojciech Jarzecki celebrant. The funeral mass will be celebrated in St Michael’s Catholic Church (1113 1 St E, Bow Island, AB) on Saturday, January 10, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. with Fr. Wojciech Jarzecki celebrant.
