Report breaks down missing persons alerts across the country involving Indigenous

The annual report of the Premier’s Council on Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls and Two Spirit Plus People included an update on MMIWG2S+ across the country for the year 2024, including in Alberta.

According to data from the not-for-profit organization Aboriginal Alert, 1,324 missing persons alerts involving Indigenous people were issued in 2024. The number is higher than the previous two years, with 1,208 alerts in 2023 and 931 in 2022.

Alberta issued 146 alerts for missing Indigenous women in 2024. By the end of the year, six were still missing and one was located deceased.

Ninety-six alerts were issued for Indigenous men in Alberta, with three still missing and 11 found deceased by the end of the year.

Six Alberta cities were listed among the urban centres with the highest missing alert numbers in 2024, including Edmonton, Calgary, Grande Prairie, FortMcMurray, Red Deer and Lethbridge.

The most missing person alerts for Indigenous people in the province were in Edmonton, where 30 alerts were issued.

Alberta had the fourth-highest number of missing person alerts for Indigenous people in 2024, behind Manitoba, Ontario and Saskatchewan.

Manitoba experienced the highest rates of missing Indigenous people. Manitoba issued 225 alerts for Indigenous women, girls and two-spirit people and 103 were for Indigenous boys and men.

Almost 300 alerts were issued in Winnipeg.
