By Canadian Press on December 23, 2025.

OTTAWA — U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariffs — and the spike in Canadian nationalism they inspired — have been named The Canadian Press News Story of the Year.

The tariffs story was selected in an annual survey of editors and news directors in media organizations from across Canada as the most important news story in Canada in 2025.

Trump’s tariffs were up against several other stories, including the Lapu-Lapu attack, labour strikes, the Blue Jays World Series run, the B.C. ostrich cull, the HBC bankruptcy, Canada recognizing Palestinian statehood, the federal election and measles outbreaks.

Here is a tally of the votes:

Trump’s tariffs: 61 votes

Blue Jays World Series run: 11 votes

Federal election 2025: 10 votes

HBC bankruptcy: four votes

Lapu-Lapu attack: three votes

Canada recognizes Palestinian statehood: two votes

Measles: two votes

Labour strikes: one vote
