House of Commons rises for six-week holiday break

OTTAWA — The House of Commons has started its winter break — without the government’s lengthy budget implementation bill becoming law.

House leader Steven MacKinnon says the past 11 weeks of the fall sitting have seen “very hard work” by the government to protect jobs and reduce the cost of living.

He accuses the opposition Conservatives of trying to prevent further progress by delaying legislation.

He says the strategy they are using to obstruct the work of the government is “self-serving.”

Conservative House leader Andrew Scheer accused the Liberals Wednesday of delaying passage of their own legislative agenda and failing to work with other parties to tackle affordability concerns.

While the House is rising without the Liberals’ budget implementation bill becoming law, the bill passed second reading this week and will head to committee for study in the new year.
