Prairie Rose Public Schools will work on developing rigour in daily classroom work and assessments as the division looks to the future following the PAT and Diploma Results Report.

Results are looked at each year to compare against previous years as well as the provincial averages, says assistant superintendent Boyd Craven.

Results from the Grade 9 PATs and Diploma exams were slightly down compared to both previous results and the provincial average. This applied to both the acceptable standard and standard of excellence rates.

Grade 6 testing revealed numbers above the province at the acceptable standard in language arts, mathematics and social studies, with the standard of excellence rates being slightly below, demonstrating positive results with new curriculums. Grade 9 results in the same subjects in addition to science were slightly below the province’s rates in both categories.

Craven noted a 10 per cent improvement in Physics 30, placing it above the province at the acceptable standard, as well as improvements in results for English 30-2 and Chemistry. PRPS still boasts high participation rates in exams and high numbers of students in dash one courses.

Moving forward, the division will “[put] emphasis on the importance of curriculum analysis and collaboration among Prairie Rose teachers,” said Craven, with focus on curriculum essentials to assist teachers in closing learning gaps and improve coordination across the division.

Focus was placed on professional development via diploma analysis and marking groups, as well as analyzing data to identify trends.
