zmason@medicinehatnews.com The province is moving ahead with its plans to explore nuclear energy, and it has scheduled several public engagement sessions in December and January to gauge public support. The Nuclear Energy Engagement and Advisory Panel is looking to gather feedback from people across the province, including the public, municipalities and industry. Virtual public information sessions will take place next week, with one webinar on Dec. 8 from 10:30 a.m. to noon and a second on Dec. 10 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. “Alberta is at the centre of Canada’s growth, and with that growth comes the responsibility to secure the next generation of energy. Nuclear power has the potential to expand our grid, support new industries and keep pace with rising demand,” said Premier Danielle Smith when the public engagement was announced in August. “This engagement gives Albertans a real voice in shaping our future, while positioning our province to lead the way in innovative, responsible energy development.” Another virtual session is scheduled to discuss nuclear safety and waste management on Jan. 16 from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Feedback from these sessions will be used to inform a final report the panel will later submit to Minister of Affordability and Utilities Nathan Neudorf by Mar. 31, 2026. “As demand for electricity grows, affordability and reliability must remain at the heart of our system. Exploring nuclear energy is about ensuring Albertans have access to dependable, emissions-free power that can support families, businesses and communities for generations,” said Neudorf in August. Further engagement activities, including in-person meetings and Indigenous consultation sessions will be announced in the new year. Interested Albertans can register to attend engagement sessions on the province’s webpage. 12
