The city announced Thursday it is bringing back its Snow Angel campaign for the first time since 2020.
The Snow Angels campaign encourages Hatters to help neighbours in need with their snow removal. The initiative is designed to help those with disabilities, illnesses and age-related mobility issues to keep their properties shovelled, ice-free and safe.
Residents in need of a Snow Angel can fill out the registration form available on the city’s webpage to join the program and receive a sign, which they can pick up at the Veiner Centre or arrange to have dropped off.
The sign is then placed in the window or on the lawn to indicate to participating Snow Angels that assistance is needed.
Snow Angels can also help Hatters struggling with a temporary situation such as recovery from an injury or a surgery who need short-term help with snow removal.
For residents who want to become an Angel themselves, it’s as simple as keeping an eye out for neighbours in need. Interested Angels can contact the Unison at Veiner Centre if they’re in need of a shovel.
“Snow Angels is a great way for people to help out a neighbour and bring the community closer together – all you need is a shovel and a little time. It’s a small act that can have a big impact. Small acts of kindness like this build strong communities that care for each other and support one another,” said Shantel Ottenbreit, community resource worker with the City of Medicine Hat.
The program also encourages Hatters to spotlight the generosity of their neighbours by nominating their Snow Angel for recognition through the city’s nomination portal.
The initiative is organized collaboratively by the City of medicine Hat, Unison at Veiner Centre, Medicine Hat Police Services Municipal Bylaw Enforcement and Neighbourhood Associations of Medicine Hat.
