newsdesk@medicinehatnews.com Following a busy online shopping weekend and with Christmas quickly approaching, police are warning residents of a higher volume of package thefts, commonly known as ‘porch piracy.’ To help residents keep gifts and online purchases secure this season, the RCMP has offered practical tips to reduce the risk of stolen deliveries. Mounties say it’s important to track packages closely and sign up for delivery alerts so you have an idea of when the package is expected to arrive, and once the package has been delivered, make sure to bring it inside as quickly as possible or have a trusted neighbour, friend or family member pick it up. Police advise asking delivery companies to place packages in less visible areas like a planter or side entrance, and many couriers offer delivery to pickup lockers, post offices or other secure locations. Visible surveillance, especially motion-activated systems, doorbell and security cameras, are effective deterrents of would-be thieves and can also be used to identify suspects if a theft occurs. Officers say try to avoid leaving packages outside for extended periods and be wary of purchases that come delivered in marked boxes, which can indicate high-value items inside. Homeowners who do a lot of online shopping can also purchase lockable tamper-resistant parcel boxes that offer weather proofing and can be placed near entryways, providing an additional layer of protection. “Online shopping is a wonderful way to avoid the crowds at the mall, ” says Cpl. Sharon McCready. “However, make sure to keep your Christmas merry by tracking your packages and protecting your generosity from porch pirates.” Mounties say to be on the lookout for suspicious activity in your neighbourhood and report to police any unfamiliar vehicles repeatedly circling the neighbourhood or individuals following delivery trucks. 11
