Medicine Hat Fire and Emergency Services responded to three structure fires and two ice investigations in November for a total of 218 calls for service.

Additionally, fire crews attended 39 medical scenes, responded to 10 outdoor fires and 75 alarm calls. Firefighters were also on scene at 20 motor vehicle collisions and attended 29 calls related to carbon monoxide and other gases.

Earlier in November, fire officials attended the annual Remembrance Day ceremony at Riverside Veterans Memorial Park and laid a wreath on behalf of the department to honour firefighters.

The department’s Top Brass was also on hand to kick off the 2025 Salvation Army Christmas Kettle Campaign in Medicine Hat.

On Nov. 14 fire chief Chad Eakins made an address during an official kettle kickoff event held in the Co-op strip mall along 13th Avenue SE.

On Nov. 20 local firefighters shared an important video safety message on burning candles, especially those with multiple wicks, after a local resident had a scare with a growing candle and attempted to douse the flame with water.

According to firefighters, water interacts with the hot wax causing a flare similar to a grease fire and recommends using a metal pot or lid to smother an out of control candle, taking away the fire’s oxygen supply.

Local crews were also on hand at Tim Horton’s locations on Nov. 21 helping to decorate Smile Cookies in support of a variety of local charities and community groups.

Leading into Black Friday and Cyber Monday, local firefighters also posted a public statement reminding residents to make sure products bought online have been properly tested and are safe to use in Canada as uncertified products pose a risk of overheating and potentially causing a fire.
