The Medicine Hat Tigers looked pretty sharp Friday in Saskatoon.

They poured on seven unanswered goals to beat the Saskatoon Blades 9-3 for a third-straight win. Friday’s win came in the first of a two-game, Saskatchewan road trip for Medicine Hat.

Defenceman Jonas Woo and forward Kade Stengrim each scored twice, Woo finishing with a pair of assists as well. Woo and his defence partner Bryce Pickford, who also scored in the win, lead the Tigers and WHL defenceman with 13 goals. Starter Carter Casey allowed three goals on 14 first-period shots before blanking the Blades through 43:41 of play, finishing with 31 saves in his seventh win on the year.

The Tigers opened the scoring 1:54 into the game.

Woo picked off a pass in the Blades’ end before skating in and wiring a shot past Saskatoon starter Evan Gardner for the early 1-0 lead. Gavin Kor had the lone assist on the goal.

Saskatoon responded a little under three minutes later. The Blades skated up the ice on a three-on-two led by Zach Olsen. He fired a shot on Casey who made the save as a Saskatoon player crashed the net, holding space in the crease as former Tiger Hayden Harsanyi knocked in the rebound.

No call was made on the ice before it was deemed a good goal from the video officials, tying the game up at 1-1 with Harsanyi’s sixth. They made it a 2-1 lead with a goal from Cooper Williams 1:47 later as the Saskatoon forward scored on the rush for his 11th.

Just 12 second later the Tigers tied the game up at 2-2 when Liam Ruck knocked in a rebound off a Noah Davidson shot for his 11th goal on the year.

The Blades ended the first period with a one-goal lead after scoring on a power play.

Tyler Parr had the puck along the boards in the Tigers’ end and fed Rowan Calvert at the side of the net where he worked his way to the front, catching defenceman Veeti Väisänen with an elbow before tucking in the puck. His 11th of the year came with 3:41 left in the frame.

The Tigers run of goals started 6:33 into the middle frame.

They forced a turnover and headed up ice on a two-on-one where Yaroslav Bryzgalov fed Ethan Neutens who wired a shot from the slot to tie the game up 3-3. Josh Van Mulligen had the second assist on Neutens’ second of the year.

A little over four minutes later, with Cam Parr screening Garnder, Pickford unleashed a shot from the point that beat the Columbus Blue Jakcets’ net minder for his 13th of the season. Dayton Reschny and Parr had the assists.

They ended the second with an insurance marker, the first of Stengrim’s pair of goals. The Brainerd, Minn. product carried the puck around the back of the Saskatoon net before curling around and firing a shot past Gardner for the 5-3 lead with 2:13 left in the second. Woo and Carter Cunningham had the assists.

The Tigers poured on three goals and in a span of 3:46 for an 8-3 lead in the third.

On a power play to open the period, Woo was posted up in the slot and he deflected a pass from Pickford for his second of the night and 13th on the year. Liam Ruck had the second assist.

Just 2:06 later, Stengrim fired a shot from the face-off dot in the Saskatoon end, beating Gardner for his second of the evening and sixth of the season. His goal ended Gardner’s night as the net minder pulled himself after allowing seven goals on 34 shots. Former Tiger Ethan McCallum took over in net, finishing with seven saves.

The Tigers scored on their first shot against McCallum with Van Mulligen firing a shot five hole for the 8-3 lead at 3:46.  Kadon McCann and Woo had the assists on Van Mulligen’s second of the year.

The onslaught of goals finally came to an end just before the halfway mark of the third when Cunningham, with options to pass on a rush, kept the puck and beat McCallum with a shot for his fifth of the season. Väisänen and Markus Ruck had the assists.

Medicine Hat outshot the Blades 43-34, with Saskatoon winning 36 face-offs to the Tigers’ 23. Medicine hat’s power play was 1-2, Saskatoon went 1-3 on the man advantage.

The Tigers (15-6-3-2) face the East division-leading Prince Albert Raiders on Saturday. Puck drops at the Art Hauser Centre at 6 p.m. MST.
