Residential building permits in Medicine Hat for the month of October are down compared to the same month in 2024. However, the total value of all buildings for which permits have been approved is still substantially higher than in 2024, helped by the approval of the Holy Trinity Academy school.
Both the total number of permits issued and the total budget for those permits is less than in October of last year.
Five permits for single-family homes and two for apartments were issued last month, for a total value of $4 million.
In October 2024, permits were issued for eight single-family dwellings, four duplexes, one apartment and one manufactured home, valued at a total of $5.2 million.
One commercial building permit was issued this month, the same as in 2024.
The total budget for the 62 permits issued for residential and non-residential builds and alterations in October totalled $6.6 million. In October 2024, 72 permits were issued with a budget of $8.2 million.
The year-to-date numbers also reflect fewer permits issued, with the city issuing 518 permits regarding residential and non-residential builds and alterations since Jan. 1. Last year, the city had issued 572 permits of all kinds by this time.
However, the total budget for the buildings and alterations encompassed in those permits is just under $144.7 million, whereas last year’s builds budgeted just over $57.6 million by the same point in time.
