newsdesk@medicinehatnews.com Rebecca Mergaert, 30, and 33 year-year-old Campbell Calkins-Smeaton, both from Medicine Hat, are facing several charges following a home invasion Sunday. Medicine Hat police responded to a home in the northeast portion of the city after the two suspects allegedly entered the home, assaulted the occupant and attempted to steal property. During the incident, one of the suspects allegedly pulled out a firearm. Members of the Major Crime Unit, Patrol Section and the Forensic Identification Unit were able to identify both suspects, who were arrested at a separate home without incident. Officers also executed a search warrant and were able to seize weapons, clothing and other items believed to be connected to the home invasion. Police also recovered a firearm and vehicle associated to the suspects. The investigation has determined that the victim and the accused were known to each other and it was an isolated incident. The victim sustained non-life threatening injuries. Mergaert has been charged with break and enter, commit robbery, possession of a prohibited weapon and unauthorized possession of a firearm. Calkins-Smeaton has been charged with break and enter, commit robbery, possession of a prohibited weapon, unauthorized possession of a firearm and five counts of breaching a release order. Mergaert was released on a release order with conditions and is scheduled to appear before court on Dec. 2, while Calkins-Smeaton was remanded into custody with a Tuesday court appearance. Traffic stop yields firearm, drugs Juanita Morrissey, 49, is facing several charges after officers discovered a loaded handgun, drugs and large sum of money during a traffic stop last Thursday. Police pulled over Morrissey during a traffic stop near Seventh Street SW and First Avenue SW and subsequently arrested her for breaching several court imposed conditions. However, a search of her vehicle led officers to the discovery of a handgun, packaged controlled drugs and an undisclosed amount of cash. Morrissey has been charged with seven counts of breaching a release order, possession of methamphetamine and fentanyl, possession of proceeds of crime, unauthorized possession of a weapon and prohibited firearm, possession of a firearm in a vehicle and possession of a loaded prohibited firearm. Morrissey was remanded into custody with a Tuesday court appearance. Police seek info related to B&E Police are asking for information from the public in regards to a Nov. 10 break and enter. According to responding officers, multiple alarms were set off at a business located in the 000 block on Eighth Street NW, with Sherie Knowles-Hicks was seen fleeing the scene. Knowles-Hicks was later arrested and charged with break and enter and commit theft and was held for a judicial hearing, She was released with a court date set for Dec. 2.
