Traffic along the Trans-Canada Highway was diverted for several hours Thursday morning following a collision between two semi trucks west of Brooks that sent one driver to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Brooks RCMP and first responders received a call at 6 a.m. after two semi trucks, each with one driver, collided at the intersection of Highway 36 and Highway 1.
Investigators say the driver of a southbound traveling semi truck on Highway 36 failed to stop at a stop sign while entering the intersection approaching Highway 1 and collided with an eastbound semi-truck. Both vehicles were pulling enclosed trailers at the time of the collision.
Both semis came to rest in the roadway in the intersection and the driver of the eastbound semi truck was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The driver of the semi which failed to stop at a stop sign was uninjured and Mounties have charged the 26-year-old male, who is a resident of Newell County, with careless driving under the Traffic Safety Act.
Traffic was diverted around the accident for more than four hours while emergency crews tended to the scene. Both highways re-opened by 10:15 a.m.
