ROBERT (BOB) BATCHELDER
In Loving Memory of ROBERT (BOB) BATCHELDER Robert (Bob) passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 21, 2025, with his loving wife, Wendy by his side. Bob was born on August 1, 1943, in Boston, Massachusetts. His father served in the U.S. Navy and after the war, the family settled in Welland, Ontario. Bob graduated high school as an Ontario Scholar and began his post-secondary education at Queen’s University, followed by McMaster University, where he earned a dual degree.
In 1972, Bob moved to Calgary and began a 16-year career at the University of Calgary as a map and air photo librarian. During these years, he and his first wife, Elizabeth, welcomed three children. The family later relocated to London, Ontario, where Bob earned a Master’s degree in Library Science. This led him to Medicine Hat, Alberta, where he played a key role in bringing technology to the Shortgrass Library System.
Shortly after moving to Medicine Hat, he met his current wife, Wendy and they were married in May 1991. Bob became a dedicated stepfather to her three children, who remember him for his steady grace, wisdom, and kindness.
Bob lived in Medicine Hat for 36 years and was deeply involved in the community. He was an active member of St. Barnabas Anglican Church and regularly volunteered his time, including filming Tigers hockey games for Cable 10. After his retirement in 2011, he contributed to organizing the Esplanade archives and authored two books for the Medicine Hat News. He was awarded the President’s Award by the Shortgrass Library System for his work in building and organizing their entire online database.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Nelson and Olive Batchelder. He is survived by his wife, Wendy, his brother, Doug (Gail) Batchelder, and his six children, Trevor (Sherilyn) Batchelder, David (Sarah) Batchelder, Heather Grant, Jonn Schoolkate, Virginia Schoolkate and Olivia (Jody) Whenham. He was blessed with 10 grandchildren; Jordan (Vanessa), Jared, Julie, Declan, Finley, Jackson, Avery, Mia, Claudia and Dominic, and one great-granddaughter, Veronica.
Bob’s funeral will be held on November 22, 2025 at 1pm at St Barnabas Anglican Church in Medicine Hat, Alberta, with a reception to follow at Liquid Concert & Event Venue at 638 14th St SW.
DOUGLAS HAGGART
1954 – DOUGLAS HAGGART – 2025
Douglas Wayne Haggart, born March 16, 1954, in North Bay, Ontario, passed away peacefully on November 14, 2025. He was the beloved son of Ken and Bernice (nee Robinson) Haggart and the eldest of three children. He was predeceased by his brother, Jeffery Haggart, his mother, and his father.
Doug is survived by his aunts, Marilyn (Haggart) of Quebec, Bev, and Delta (nee Robinson) along with their families of Ontario. He leaves behind his sister, Karen (Steve) Lecappelain and his nieces and nephew, Amy, Lisa, Curtis, and Jenna along with their families of Ontario. His daughter, Shannon (Mason) Eastveld and his three cherished grandchildren, Tenchi, Echo, and Sierra of Alberta, as well as his son, Steven Rode, of Alberta, also honour his memory.
A proud Canadian and Veteran, Doug grew up playing hockey, participating in Army Cadets, and joined the Canadian Armed Forces at the age of 18. His military career took him around the world, including a peacekeeping mission in Romania in the 70s and deployment to Greenland. After returning to Canada, he served at CFAD before retiring from active duty. Doug then moved to Calgary, where he met Carolyn, and together they embarked on a life of adventure across Canada.
In 2001, Doug settled in Walsh, Alberta, where he dedicated his final years to serving at CFB Suffield for DND until his retirement in 2022. An avid lover of nature, he enjoyed camping, fishing at dawn, and a passion for renovating homes having owned and transformed four houses across the country, mostly by himself, with his own hands and heart.
In his retirement, Doug moved to Medicine Hat, where he cherished his role as a grandfather. Whether celebrating holidays, supporting his grandchildren’s Air Cadet pursuits, or simply watching hockey and football together, Doug was always present with love and encouragement.
Doug was a man of service, kindness, and unwavering support. A pillar of his family, community, and country, his willingness to lend a helping hand and his dedication to others will be deeply missed. His legacy of love, service, and community will never be forgotten.
A Memorial Service honouring Doug’s life will be held at Saamis Memorial Funeral Chapel, 1 Dunmore Road SE, Medicine Hat, AB, on Saturday, November 22, 2025, at 11:00 am with Pastor Shane Hein Officiating. Today there is a new angel in heaven. Carole passed away on Tuesday, November 11, 2025, in Medicine Hat, AB at the age of 88 years, beloved wife of the late Gerald (Gerry) Wescott. She will be dearly missed by sons, Douglas, Donald and Craig; grandsons, Clifford, Sam, Eric and Cam; brother, Wayne Maki, of Granum, Alberta; sister-in-law Gwen (Ray) Westcott, of Lanigan, Saskatchewan and brother-in-law, Allen (Karen) Kolman, of Whitewood, Saskatchewan, as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. She was predeceased by her husband, Gerald; parents, Donald and Signe Maki; Gerald’s parents, Clifford and Dorothy; stepfather, Wellington Kolman; Gerald’s sister, Mona Palmer (Westcott); as well as maternal and paternal grandparents. Carole was born on her uncle’s farm near Tantallon, Saskatchewan on June 11, 1937, to Donald and Signe Maki. She attended Grove Park School for grades 1 to 10 then Whitewood High School for grades 11 and 12. Carole went on the get her Registered Nurses designation at Regina General Hospital School of Nursing, graduating in 1959. Carole loved her nursing profession and continued to work in the medical field for almost 40 years. On June 11, 1960, Carole walked down the aisle with her high school sweetheart to start their dance of life. Their union was joined by three sons in rapid succession. Upon graduation she began working at the Whitewood Hospital. In 1969 the family moved to Lynn Lake Manitoba where she worked at Sherritt Gordon Mines Hospital. While in Lynn Lake nurses learned many other skills such as taking x-rays, simple lab procedures and emergency flights to and from First Nations camps and to Winnipeg, she enjoyed the action. 1975 saw the family move to Medicine Hat, Alberta. Carole was one of the first female Paramedics in Alberta, she worked with the Medicine Hat Ambulance for several years. She worked in the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital Emergency Department until retirement. Carole loved to travel, she visited Mexico, New Zealand, Fiji, Cuba, Hong Kong, Thailand, Korea, China, several trips to the U.S.A, and western Canada. She also loved trying different things such as mountain hiking, golf, skiing (cross country and down hill) dragon boating and many types of physical fitness. She loved to learn new things and took classes in oil painting, photography, Brazilian embroidery as well as many sewing classes. At Carole’s request there will be no funeral services. There will be a graveside service in Whitewood, Saskatchewan at a later date. Ben Herter of Medicine Hat, Alberta, beloved husband of Madeline, passed away peacefully on Saturday, November 15, 2025, at the age of 92 years.
Ben is survived by his loving wife of 72 years, Madeline; two children, Tarry (Audrey) Herter and Sandy (Vic) Liske; four grandchildren, Neil (Laurie) Thauberger, Nicole Forsberg (Barry Windover), Kelly (Anita) Herter and Cody (Amanda) Liske; five great grandchildren, Tyler Thauberger, Luke and Stormie Forsberg, Talyssa and Kierra Herter; one sister-in-law, Leona Herter, one son-in-law, Larry Lant and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents, Ed and Mary Herter; two brothers, Edwin (Esther) Herter and Lloyd Herter; two sisters, Edna (Jack) Zollner and Violet (Hilbert) Diebert; one son-in-law, Ed Thauberger; one grandson, Ryan Herter and his daughter, Sharon Lant.
Ben was born on January 14, 1933, to Edward and Mary Herter in the Golden Prairie district. He grew up with his four siblings on the family farm. He married the love of his life, Madeline Fauser, on May 23, 1953. Together they raised three children: Sharon, Tarry and Sandy.
Farming and cattle were his life for many years. Besides many fishing trips, Ben and Madeline loved to travel, mostly to Arizona for winter vacations.
Ben always looked forward to going for coffee! After moving to Medicine Hat in 1978, he was a daily fixture at various coffee spots. Even in his last days, as difficult as it was to move around, he was still wanting to meet friends for coffee.
Ben was loved and will be deeply missed. He was an outstanding husband, father and grandfather, and he will remain in the hearts of those who knew him forever.
The family would like to thank Dr. Lotter and the wonderful staff on 4 West for the outstanding care he received.
The funeral service will be held in the PATTISON FUNERAL HOME & CELEBRATION OF LIFE CENTRE on Friday, November 21, 2025, at 1:00 p.m. with Life Celebrant David Townsend officiating.
