Murphy nets hat trick, U.S. beats Canada 4-1 in Rivalry Series opener

CLEVELAND — Abbey Murphy scored three times, Taylor Heise had a goal and three assists, and the United States women’s national hockey team defeated Canada 4-1 in Thursday’s opening game of the 2025-26 Rivalry Series.

Sarah Fillier gave Canada a 1-0 lead with a power-play goal at 9:27 of the first period, but Heise got the equalizer 16 seconds later at Rocket Arena in Cleveland, Ohio.

Murphy scored a power-play goal at 8:43 of the second period to put the Americans up 2-1, and she scored again at 17:28 to give the U.S. a 3-1 lead heading into the third period.

Murphy recorded her hat trick with a power-play goal at 1:54 of the third period.

Canadian goalie Eve Gascon stopped 22 of 26 shots, while U.S. netminder Aerin Frankel stopped 26 of 27 shots.

Canada went 1-for-3 on the power play, while the Americans were 2-for-5.

Game 2 of the four-game series is Saturday night at KeyBank Center in Buffalo, N.Y. Games 3 and 4 will be played at Rogers Place in Edmonton, on Dec. 10 and Dec. 13, respectively.
