Local cops warn Hatters of cryptocurrency scams

The Medicine Hat Police Service issued a public advisory Wednesday reminding residents to be wary when approached with online investments or cryptocurrency opportunities.

Police say they have seen a rise in social media ads, text messages and fraudulent websites that often promote high-return investments involving Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. Officers warn these sites may appear to be legitimate, however scammers have access to professional looking materials and fake testimonials.

“They are designed to steal your money and personal information,” reads the advisory.

MHPS says the best way to protect yourself is to avoid making financial decisions based on online advertisements or unsolicited investment advice, and suggest seeking professional advice from a licensed adviser or bank.

Money sent through crypto transfer platforms or through wire transfers is often difficult or impossible to trace or recover.

In October, RCMP also released a warning to the public of cryptocurrency scams. Mounties echoed police, saying it’s important to do research before investing money into cryptocurrency.

In an Oct. 16 release, Mounties reported a rise in a scam where individuals pose as officials from local, provincial, or federal government agencies.

“These scammers often use convincing language and sophisticated tactics, including fake endorsements and seemingly legitimate links to lure unsuspecting investors,” reads the release.

RCMP have provided four steps to follow to protect yourself from fraud – verify websites, avoid clicking suspicious links, conduct thorough research and consult a financial adviser.

Police urge residents who believe they have been targeted or have fallen victim to an online investment scam to report it to the Medicine Hat Police Service by calling 403-529-8481, or through the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centres by visiting antifraudcentre.ca.
