The Government of Alberta announced a new shared services organization, Health Shared Services, on Monday afternoon.

The new organization was established to centralize key functions like IT, finance and human resources amid the ongoing restructuring of the provincial health-care system.

As of Nov. 1, HSS will support the four health agencies – Acute Care, Primary Care, Recovery and Assisted Living – as well as the provincial health corporations for cancer care, Emergency Health Services and organ donation and transplantation. HSS will also support the acute care service providers like Alberta Health Services, Covenant Health and Lamont Health.

The province says HSS will co-ordinate system-wide activities and ensure accountability.

Critics of the health-care restructuring have highlighted the need for co-ordinated operational planning across all branches of the new system.

“Alberta is home to dedicated health-care professionals and support staff who are committed to delivering world-class care. I look forward to working across the health-care system to ensure seamless patient journeys while prioritizing efficiency and effectiveness,” said Maureen Towle, interim chief executive officer of HSS.

The province says work is ongoing to finalize the structure and governance of the organization. HSS will begin delivering services to the health system on Dec. 1 and is expected to be fully operational by Apr. 1.
