The RCMP is hoping to help keep little ghosts and ghouls safe this Friday with a few Halloween safety tips.

“Whether trick-or-treating, giving out candy yourself, attending a ghostly dinner party, or staying inside, we can all do our part to help ensure everyone’s safety,” said the RCMP.

The RCMP recommends brightly coloured costumes with reflective tape or glow sticks to increase visibility, as well as makeup over masks to not restrict range of vision. For those who are wearing masks, the RCMP recommend removing it while walking from house to house and crossing streets.

Staying on sidewalks, in well lit areas and avoiding unnecessary street-crossing is also a must to avoid potential collisions.

“Stay on the doorstep or sidewalk. Never go inside the home or car of someone you don’t know,” said the RCMP.

For those staying at home, the RCMP suggests keeping porch lights or external security lights on, removing any potential tripping hazards and only handing out commercially wrapped candy and snacks. Parents should assess their children’s candy for any signs of tampering or unwrapped items.

As costumes can be frightening for animals, pets should be kept inside and away from the door.

And, of course, if a Halloween party is the destination, the RCMP asks residents to not drive impaired and to only take substances from those they know and trust.

“Alberta RCMP is witch-ing all ghouls, superheroes and vampires a Happy Halloween,” said the RCMP.
