asmith@medicinehatnews.com The Bow Island Emergency Department is reducing its hours due to an ongoing staff shortage. Until further notice, the ED will only be open from 5 p.m. on Fridays to 8 a.m. on Mondays, says Alberta Health Services. It is currently closed and will remain closed until 5 p.m. on Friday, and then will remain open until 8 a.m. Nov. 3. An ongoing clinical personnel shortage and inability to secure regular and consistent coverage was cited as the reason for closure. AHS says it is actively recruiting positions in the community. Patients are asked to call 911 if they have a medical emergency and advised that EMS services are prepared to respond to emergency events and support transfers to neighbouring sites. Those seeking care can access emergency services at the Taber Health Centre or the Medicine Hat Regional Hospital, which are both 57 kilometres away. AHS also advises that for non-emergency medical questions, Health Link at 811 is available 24/7. It is “thankful for the support of surrounding healthcare centres and medical staff and would like to thank the community for their patience and understanding during this time.” 7
