Sou Boss, former president and founding member Medicine Hat United Ratepayers Association, announced she would be stepping down from her role in a social media post Thursday.

Boss has chosen to step down from the MHURA board to focus on her family and health.

“Over the past two years, I have been incredibly proud of what MHURA has accomplished,” wrote Boss. “Together, we built a grassroots movement that gave a strong voice to Medicine Hat’s citizens and small businesses.”

Boss credited the association for bringing advocacy when electricity prices spiked in 2023 and said its persistence led council to return more than $33 million to customers.

“The victory showed what determined citizens can achieve when they stand together,” said Boss.

More recently in June the association met with city staff and packed an open house to share their opposition of the Municipally Controlled Corporation, a controversial topic widely also discussed by candidates during their election campaigns.

In her letter, Boss leaves the eight newly elected councillors and mayor-elect Linnsie Clark a mandate which includes an ask to temporarily freeze property taxes, eliminate the Municipal Consent and Access Fee and avoid further investments into the Saamis Solar Project without “clear, transparent evidence of community benefits.”

A MCAF utility fee is applied to electrical and gas service rates intended to cover access to city land for power lines and subdivision and taxes on lands used.

According to the most recent data provided by the city, this fee costs homeowners an average of approximately $7.75 per month.

“I think most are hopeful this new Council will bring real changes and fiscal discipline to the table,” adds Boss.
