sports@medicinehatnews.com@MedicineHatNews The Fire Dragon Taekwondo dojang won big last weekend in Edmonton. The local athletes attended the 40th annual Grand Master K.H. Min Taekwondo tournament in Edmonton on Oct. 18, with owners and coaches Master Mark Pellerin and Master Annie taking 13 athletes to compete against 432 other athletes in varying age divisions. Three Hatters medalled in the individual sport poomsae, where competitors don’t know the sequence of martial arts movements they are to follow until seconds before starting. Dakota Cole (19) and Macallan Whelpley (14) each captured silver. Connor Whelpley (11) took both a silver and a bronze in pairs. In the individual rec poomsae, Sarah Zacharias (37), Kyrina Cole (18), Paige Melhoff (14) and Sadie Zacharias (10) each captured gold. Randee Holton (37), Amelia De Guia (8) and Kyden Holton (8) each took silver and Lane Hager (13) returned with a bronze. In the sparring competition, a controlled form of practice fighting used in martial arts to simulate real combat and develop skills like timing, technique and strategy, three Hatters medalled. Hager took a silver and both Jack Hexter (8) and De Guia taking bronze. 8
