Initial results from the Cypress County municipal election suggest largely a return to form, with one new face joining council.

After polls closed yesterday at 8 p.m., the largest delay in counting was bringing all the boxes from throughout the region to a central location at the County Office in Dunmore. Unofficial results were posted at 10 p.m. on the county website.

Several wards are acclaimed with previous councillors returning for another term, including Michelle McKenzie for Ward 1, Lloyd Want for Ward 3, Dustin Vossler for Ward 6 and Keith Ritz for Ward 9 representing Suffield.

Races included Blaine Brost (incumbent, 146) beating Michael Teliske (46) for Ward 2, Robin Kurpjuweit (incumbent, 102) beating Bill Thompson (71) for Ward 4, Dan Hamilton (incumbent, 178) beating Della Burkitt (110) in Ward 5 and Shane Hok (incumbent, 55) beating Les Woodrow (39) for Ward 8.

Ward 7 notably lacked an incumbent, as councillor and deputy reeve Richard Oster made the decision to not seek re-election. Council hopefuls Ana McFadyen and Garry Procter made up options for the residents of Seven Persons and North Desert Blume.

Unofficial results saw Procter taking Ward 7 with 181 votes to McFadyen’s 124.

Procter told the News he feels the win is something hard earned, after knocking on every door within the large geographical area of the ward.

“I’m looking forward to working with the people,” said Procter. “I’ve already had a couple of phone calls from people from Desert Blume. We’re going to open up the lines of communication, we’re going to get along with the people and we’re going to get things done.”

Council will choose the county’s reeve on Oct. 27.
